Four middle-class Bengali guys go for a pleasure drive to a forest. They call the villagers "roughs", talk about Burt Lancaster films, and flirt with local women... The character study that emerges is subtle, gripping and Chekhovian: writer/director/composer Satyajit Ray serves up the nuances of snobbery on a skewer. The languor of the forest and its dappled light - as captured by the great cinematographer Soumendu Roy - are unforgettable. Sharmila Tagore leads a skilled ensemble cast.
