The first restoration by Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Foundation.
Launched in Cannes this year, Martin Scorsese's new Foundation seeks to restore lost classics of world cinema and and return them to the public eye. Scorsese has selected EIFF - which celebrated his work with a retrospective back in 1975! - as the UK launchpad for this project, advisors to which include Souleymane Cissé, Stephen Frears, Walter Salles and Wong Kar-wai. The first completed restoration is this 1981 portrait of the Moroccan music scene which Scorsese saw on late-night television during the making of The King of Comedy, and which went on to inspire the style of The Last Temptation of Christ. 'It's been an obsession of mine since 1981,' states Scorsese, 'and that's why we are inaugurating the Foundation with Trances.' HM
