It's Gonna Get Worse
Karel Zídek, Filip Kankovsky, Tereza Hofová, Mirek Skultéty, Perla Kotmelová
Bold, raw, uproarious portrait of youth adrift in 1970s Czechoslovakia.
Fittingly for a film based upon a legendary cult novel (which was widely distributed in photocopied form by enterprising Czech teens upon its initial printing in 1983), It's Gonna Get Worse has had an unconventional cinematic life in its homeland, primarily screening at clubs, pubs and gig venues. Certainly its characters would want nothing else: their lives centre upon music, drinking, and coming up with increasingly extreme methods of dodging the military draft. Beautifully shot by a largely student crew on 16mm newsreel stock, and peopled with hugely engaging characters, this true rebel movie is an expansive, provocative, and oddly touching account of life on the edge.
