A tumultuous year in Lebanon: a revealing and dynamic set of short films shot from the day Israel began its assault in July 2006 to spring 2007.
In any given war, the stories we see on the news only provide a partial glimpse of a country's upheaval and agony. A vibrant video scene has emerged in Lebanon over the past few years, encouraged by grassroots organisations such as Ashkal Alwan and Beirut DC; when Israeli war planes began dropping bombs on Beirut and southern Lebanon in July 2006, directors and artists began documenting the war and its aftermath from their homegrown perspective. Most eschewed the easy choice of depicting the violence to reflect instead on personal stories. The films - made in extraordinary circumstances - run the gamut of styles and emotions, from raw to polished, witty to oblique, and reportage to art. This selection was programmed in association with ArteEast.
